SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 2025

The Nicene Creed is one of the foundational statements of Christian belief, shared across most Christian traditions. We join in this statement of our faith at every Eucharist. It was first agreed at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, celebrating its 1700 anniversary this year. In 325, a gathering of bishops from across the Christian world were convened by the Emperor Constantine. The Council sought to resolve disputes about the identity of Jesus Christ and affirmed that he is “of one being with the Father”. The Creed was expanded in its present form at the First Council of Constantinople in AD 381. It sets out the Church’s faith in the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and has been recited in Christian worship down the centuries as a shared declaration of belief, unity and hope.

The Church of England has Commissioned We Believe: Exploring the Nicene Creed, inviting readers to mark 1700 years since the Nicene Creed’s original development, and published by Church House Publishing, the booklet explores the theological depth and contemporary relevance of the Nicene Creed – one of the most enduring and universal expressions of Christian faith. Through daily Scripture passages, prayers and prompts for reflection, the booklet encourages individuals and communities to explore what it means to say “we believe” in the context of today’s world. Dr Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield, Chair of the Liturgical Commission, said: “The Nicene Creed has been a cornerstone of Christian belief for 1700 years – a statement of faith that connects us not only to one another, but also to generations before us as well as to Christians across the world today.’

The Greatest Story Ever Told.  The Big Church Read brings people together to read the same book at the same time. Over five sessions, we will read a chapter from the book, then watch a short video from Bear Grylls and Andrew Ollerton (from the Bible Society) before we reflect and explore the themes.

The five-chapter book invites us into the drama of Jesus’ life like never before. With gripping storytelling and raw honesty, Bear Grylls retells the gospel through the eyes of those who knew Jesus best; his mother Mary, Thomas,

Simon Peter, John and Mary Magdalene. Their first-hand encounters bring the story to life with intensity, warmth, and deep reverence.  At the heart of it all are Jesus’ own words, taken directly from the Bible, letting the greatest story ever told speak for itself. If you are interested – please let the Vicar know. The book can be purchased on Amazon – or if a few of us wish to join the read, we can have a group discount from ‘The Big Church Read’!

The United Nations International Day of Older People 2025 is being celebrated to raise awareness of opportunities and the challenges that are being faced by an ageing population.

This year’s theme is about “Building Belonging.”  As we get older, staying connected remains important just as it did when we were younger.  However, there are certain aspects of life, like retirement, health decline, and loss of a partner, that bring about new challenges and can affect our well-being. This year, our Pastoral Chaplain Mark Cooke  is planning an

Afternoon Tea at St Paul’s, Colwyn Bay

Saturday, the 27th September  2 pm-4 pm.

There will be entertainment throughout the afternoon, where hopefully everyone can enjoy each other’s company and, more importantly, make meaningful social connections, and learn about what is taking place in the Mission Area to support Older People’s Well-being.  So please do come and support this FREE event, you never know, you might make a new friend.

All welcome – croeso i bawb.

THANK YOU for your support at our recent Afternoon Tea – a total of £379.17 has been sent to the Breast Cancer Now Charity.

JULY NEWSLETTER 2025

How many of you have heard of Cursillo? It is a movement within the church, originating in Spain, that encourages and supports Christians in their faith. ‘Cursillo’ is a Spanish word which translates as ‘short course’ and is a way of empowering Christians to grow through prayer, study and reflection.

Cursillo was brought to the United Kingdom in 1981, by an American who was serving his curacy in Holyhead. He organised for a group from Dallas, Texas, to come over to put on a three-day course here in Wales and in the Diocese of Gloucester. Over the next few years, Canon Hywyn Jones (Rector of Holyhead at the time) and his wife Valerie were instrumental in promoting this throughout the United Kingdom.

After attending a course – the prayer, study and fellowship continues with regular get togethers or ‘Ultreyas’ of local Christians for continued growth and spiritual development.  There will be an Ultreya / Eucharist at St Paul’s on Saturday July 12th at 12 noon followed by refreshments.  All welcome.

Would you like to participate in The Big Church Read in October? The Greatest Story Ever Told.  The Big Church Read brings people together to read the same book at the same time. Over five sessions, we will read a chapter from the book, then watch a short video from Bear Grylls and Andrew Ollerton (from the Bible Society) before we reflect and explore the themes.

The five-chapter book invites us into the drama of Jesus’ life like never before. With gripping storytelling and raw honesty, Bear Grylls retells the gospel through the eyes of those who knew Jesus best; his mother Mary, Thomas,

VE DAY SERVICE at St Paul’s Church, Colwyn Bay on Thursday May 8th at 7pm

from the VE DAY SPEECH OF HIS MAJESTY KING GEORGE VI

Today we give thanks to almighty God for a great deliverance. Speaking from our Empire’s oldest capital city, war-battered but never for one moment daunted or dismayed—speaking from London, I ask you to join with me in that act of thanksgiving.

There is great comfort in the thought that the years of darkness and danger in which the children of our country have grown up are over and, please God, for ever. We shall have failed and the blood of our dearest will have flowed in vain if the victory which they died to win does not lead to a lasting peace, founded on justice and good will.

This is the task to which now honour binds us. In the hour of danger, we humbly committed our cause into the hand of God and he has been our strength and shield. Let us thank him for his mercies and in this hour of victory commit ourselves and our new task to the guidance of that same strong hand.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK    MAY 11th – 17th 2025

This year, Christian Aid celebrates 80 years of hope. For eighty years, Christian Aid has been fighting poverty and injustice, offering hope to communities who need it most.

'Climate change has been killing our crops.’

An inspirational farmer and community leader, Aurelia and her family belong to the Indigenous Q’eqchi’ community of the Alta Verapaz region of Guatemala. The climate crisis and industrial plantations have changed Q’eqchi’ land dramatically. Gruelling heatwaves, savage storms and unpredictable seasons are ravaging farms.

Industrial agriculture is taking over the last of the region’s natural resources to feed the world’s richest countries.  Many of the vital crops that Aurelia depends on are withering and dying before her eyes. It’s a heartbreaking injustice that a community should be threatened by a climate crisis they didn’t cause. Aurelia, along with the women and girls of her community, has the twice-daily challenge of collecting water from a cenote – a natural sinkhole like a cave, with water at the bottom. Climate change is getting worse every day, killing plantations and people.

Aurelia’s farm firstly feeds her family. She tries to grow a range of crops to provide them with a balanced diet that they need to thrive. In this way, she can protect her loved ones from malnutrition and ill health. But as increasingly intense conditions kill her crops, her ability to safeguard her family slips away. She’s observed many impacts of the climate crisis, including extended dry seasons, the degradation of soil, contaminated water and a decreasing diversity of plants and crops.

There was a prediction this would happen in the future, but it has come earlier. Guatemala’s dry and rainy seasons dictate that farming families must carefully plan how and when to use their harvests. It’s essential that they build

reserves to sustain them through lean periods.

Aurelia put herself forward to attend the specialist agricultural training on offer through the work of Christian Aid’s partner, Congcoop. With funding from Christian Aid, Congcoop supports communities to return to Indigenous farming practices and adopt agroecological approaches that conserve their land, culture and livelihood. Agroecology, put simply, is farming in a sustainable way that works with, not against, nature. It’s the application of ecological principles in farming – a blend of ancient and modern wisdom.  By working with Congcoop, Aurelia’s gained the knowledge to cultivate native seeds that are better suited to the changing climate. She’s producing her own organic fertiliser, creating nurseries, constructing rainwater collection systems, and making nutritious food and medicine for her chickens.

Aurelia’s story reminds us that even the most proactive, determined and ambitious among us can need a helping hand in life. Your support is urgently needed to ensure we can be there for Indigenous families who are bearing the full force of the climate crisis.

APRIL 2025

During this month we have the opportunity to journey with Our Lord: from Passion Sunday to Palm Sunday, the events of Holy Week, the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday, the Garden of Gethsemane, the trials, culminating in the Crucifixion on Good Friday – before we celebrate the Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter Day.

Around the walls of St Paul’s Church, we see The Stations of the Cross - Jesus' journey to the cross on Good Friday.

We walk from Christ’s trial to His crucifixion at Calvary and we stop and stand at stations that commemorate various events that took place along the way – the path called the Via Dolorosa.

Today, Christians walk that path as a way of relating to Jesus.

On the Monday of Holy Week (April 14th) there is an opportunity for us all to travel along a path representing that same path, as we walk along, stopping briefly at each station, to hear verses of scripture read out – to pray and to meditate. As we move from one station to the next, it becomes a devotional act, as we walking with Jesus as He walks to Calvary.

At the first station, Jesus is condemned to death. He carries his cross at the second station. He falls for the first time at the third. He meets his mother at the fourth and at the fifth, Simon of Cyrene helps him carry his cross. Veronica wipes his face at the sixth station.

He falls again at the seventh station and at the eighth he meets some of the women of Jerusalem. He falls again at the ninth station. At the tenth, he is stripped of his garments and is nailed to the cross at the eleventh.

While on the cross, Jesus speaks the seven last words which includes saving one of the thieves hanging beside him. He also tells John, his beloved disciple, to take care of his mother, as he dies on the cross at the twelfth station, with just Mary his Mother, John, and Mary Magdalene there with him.

At the thirteenth station, his body is taken down from the cross, and laid in the tomb at the fourteenth station.

The huge stone over the tomb is the final sign of the permanence of death.

Who would have imagined this tomb would soon be empty or that Jesus would show himself alive to his disciples, or  that they would recognize him in the breaking of bread?

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,

because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM or EASTER TRIDUUM is the period of three days that begins with the liturgy on the evening of Maundy Thursday.

Maundy Thursday takes us into the heart of the city of Jerusalem to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his Apostles. We are led to the heart of love, as Jesus serves and washes the feet of his friends as they shared their final meal. After supper they go out to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus asks his disciples to stay awake while he prays. Judas, the betrayer, comes with soldiers and Jesus is arrested. We celebrate the Institution of Holy Communion with the Eucharist of The Last Supper. In obedience to his command to ‘do this in remembrance of me’ we recall Jesus’ act of self-giving love in dying to redeem us, seen in the Last Supper. At the end of this service the mood changes from celebration to the agony of prayer, betrayal, arrest and trial, the altars are stripped to represent the stripping of Jesus before his crucifixion.

Good Friday is a day in which great emotion is expressed within quiet and solemn worship. During our services we journey with Jesus through the pain and anguish of trial and condemnation, to carrying his cross through the streets to crucifixion and death.

Easter Day we celebrate the joy of the Resurrection.

After the recent water ‘crisis’ in this part of North Wales, it made many of us realise how much we take for granted … turning on a tap and having running water, not to mention the amount of water it takes to flush a toilet! Our water crisis was short lived, for there was an end on sight.

Many are not that fortunate -  1 in 10 people don’t have access to clean water worldwide. 1.5 billion people don’t have their own toilet.  We all have a right to clean water.

MARCH NEWSLETTER

LENT STUDY GROUP

Our Lent Study Group will meet in Dewi Sant Church on Tuesday mornings at 11am (coffee served from 1045 am) beginning March 4th.

In a world where it can sometimes feel hard to be optimistic, God offers us something deeper – hope. This Lent is an opportunity to put down deep roots of hope, discovering God's promises for the future and his presence with us now.

MARCH 5th - ASH WEDNESDAY

There will be a service of  Holy Eucharist with the Impostition of Ashes  at 10am on Ash Wednesday at St Paul’s.

As we enter Lent, the 40 days that precede Easter is the time when Christians engage in prayer, fasting, abstinence and giving up something for the entirety of Lent.

The name Ash Wednesday derives from the biblical significance of ashes. The Bible mentions ashes on numerous occasions – Job, who suffered from terrible miseries and false consolers is said to have sat among the ashes.

On Ash Wednesday, those who attend church will receive ashes in the symbol of a cross on their foreheads, as the words ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return’ are spoken.

CRAFT GROUP  - will meet in Dewi Sant on Monday March 10th  between 2pm and 4pm. Bring along your craft and share your knowledge! Knitting – Crochet – Card Making – what craft do you do that can be shared with others? Come along and learn a new skill. Refreshments, tea, biscuits. All welcome.

MESSY CHURCH  will take place in Dewi Sant on Sunday March 23rd from 3pm – 5pm. A special afternoon for all the family. Please come along and bring others to join us.

TEA TOGETHER  will be held in Dewi Sant Wednesday March 26th  between 2pm and 4pm. All are welcome to come along for a time of friendship, fellowship, tea and cakes

WATER AID   Many of us were impacted by the recent water crisis here in our part of North Wales. For some, it brought the best out of us as we showed concern for our neighbours. It also made us realise how, at the flick of a switch, our dishwashers and washing machines automatically clean everything – not to mention the amount of water it takes to flush a toilet! Our water crisis was short lived, for there was an end on sight. We were also blessed with litres of bottled water made available to us. How different it is for others. It is said that 1 in 10 people don’t have access to clean water worldwide. 1.5 billion people don’t have their own toilet. We all have a right to clean water.

Having had our eyes opened when we were without water – there is going to be a Concert in aid of Water Aid in St Paul’s Church on Tuesday, April 8th at 7pm.

Publicity for this event will be out shortly – but please save the date.

NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY 2025

Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, is celebrated on February 2nd.  It marks one of the pivotal moments in the Christian year as on this day, we officially finish the season of Christmas, the time when we focus on God coming among us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. Now we turn our thoughts to Jesus, his passion, death and resurrection. Christ fulfilling his destiny as Son of God, as our Saviour.

Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary forty days after the birth of her son Jesus. On this day, we remember the presentation of Jesus in the temple.  Forty days after the birth of a Jewish boy, it was custom to take him to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented to God by his thankful parents.

In Luke’s Gospel, we are reminded Jesus was met by Anna and Simeon. When Simeon held Jesus, he uttered those words that have become known as the Nunc Dimittis:

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,

according to thy word.

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation;

Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles

and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Father, we bring to an end our celebration of the Saviour’s birth. Help us, in whom he has been born, to live his life that has no end.

Father, we have sung your praise with shepherds and angels: may Christ be born in our hearts today. Praise to Christ our Light.

We have shared in the joy of Simeon and Anna; help us, like them, the trust your word. Praise to Christ our Light.

We have greeted Jesus, the light of the world; may we be filled with the light of your love.

Praise to Christ our Light.

We turn from Christ’s birth to his passion. Help us, for whom Lent is near,

to enter deeply into the Easter mystery.

May we bless one another in your name.Help us to go in peace, and to shine with your light in the world. Amen.

THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CEREMONIES move us each year, none more so than this year when it is 80 years since Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated from Nazi control.

Many of us will have watched survivors and their families pay respect to the courage of those who endured the terrible events. The Archbishops of Wales writes:

‘We are conscious that war and conflict continue to dominate the international landscape. We appear either incapable or unwilling to learn lessons from the suffering inflicted on so many and take the hard and painful path of learning what justice and peace means for our world. Recalling these times might cause us all to pause afresh and to ponder how to make a lasting legacy of memorial, a source of hope for our own future.’

THANK YOU to so many of you who have offered your good wishes following Bishop Gregory’s announcement that I am to be made an honorary canon. Thank you, too, for the beautiful bouquet of flowers, champagne and most generous donation towards purchasing a ‘piped’ cassock. It is on order!

I do hope as many of you as are able will join with me and others as Bishop Gregory installs eight canons during Evensong at St Asaph Cathedral on Sunday, March 9th at 3.30pm.

The appointment is announced today (February 2nd) of the the Rev’d Ashleigh Askwith as a priest in charge in the Aled Mission Area. Ashleigh is currently assistant curate in the Diocese of Chester. She will join Gareth, working in the newly configured group of churches here, in the communities of Llansannan, Llanfair TH, Llangernyw, Llanddulas, Llysfaen, Old Colwyn, Llanelian and Betws yn Rhos.

Last year, Christ Church and St Paul’s Church attained A Rocha Bronze Award. It would be good if our churches could move forward and work towards the Silver Award. The Diocesan Website says: an eco church award is given by the Christian conservation charity A Rocha UK, and reflects a church’s commitment to walk in step with nature and put creation care at the heart of what they do – in their worship and teaching, use of buildings and land, community and global engagement and by making lifestyle changes.
